  • New Greenhouse

My neighbour has offered me the use of her heated greenhouse as they do not have time to do anything with it.

Help!! what are the best things to grow in it, I know tomatoes, but are there any particular type that is best suited in there, as well as peppers & chillis etc. There are so many types that it is a bit confusing.

    All advice welcome

Look for packets that say "indoor" and "cordon" on them - the latter means they grow tall, so they make better use of the space (but they'll need support). Plum tomatoes such as Roma or San Marzano are a good idea if you want tomato sauce for your pasta; Gardener's Delight is a very reliable (and tasty) cherry tomato, ideal for beginners - I've grown it nearly every year for about four years and never regretted it!

Peppers and chillies are also good choices, though I haven't had enough experience with those to be able to offer suggestions. Cucumbers are easy and prolific, so I'm told (too prolific, sometimes - what do you do with a glut???)!

The first year I had my green house I did sooooo many tomatoes that I had to give loads away and I was a little attached to them! So my advice is perhaps buy a selection pack of tomatoes so you get a nice variety? Chillies go really well I froze, put in olive oil and dried mine and used for a couple of years after! But best of all you will be pottering about in a few months transplanting and it will be raining outside and you will be warm and very very happy.. Enjoy
