I will be sowing broad beans (Aquadulce) in February as soon as the frost allows, I think it's a bit early yet. I have one row from November last years but a row now has chance to beat the blackfly.

I haven't started anything yet. It's still too cold and dark. Next month (Feb) I will be starting my onion seed, tomatoes and chillies.

Talking about Broad beans - i attempted to grow them last year, but i didnt actually get any Broad beans they were covered in little black bugs. How can i stop that this year? Is there anything i can plant with them which is a deterrant?
        Thanks

At the first sign of the blackfly you need to pinch out he growing tip. It wont completely control them but they seem to stop breeding and you will only have a few blackfly around. Or if you have a hosepipe you can simply hose them of the plant but it need doing almost every day and is not as effective as removing the tip.

You need to pinch out the tips when the pods have started to form. And you need to squish with your fingers too.
Keep on top of them, and they won't get out of control.
I find the Crimson Flowered are less susceptible, but perhaps only when grown alongside regular ones.

Nasturtium are a good sacrificial plant, but not usually growing until summer - they're more useful grown amongst runners.

I agree with the pinching out the tips advise but the sooner you get them in the less chance there is for blackfly to establish. I very rarely get any on the November sown beans.

Ive got my normal and elephant garlics in, my red and white onion and as I cant wait - I've sown some jalapenos and sweet red peppers indoors! My onions are doing well and my garlics got great roots and shoots.

                    Good luck sweetie! x
