  • Saved Runner Bean Seed

I have saved some of the seed from my runners Lady Di and Painted Lady if I grow them this year will they grow ok or is there a danger that due to cross contamination they wont grow true.

Think that runner beans do cross but you could be in for a treat with your new type!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I've grown Lady Di and Painted Lady together for about 7 years now and saved seed each year. Presume they've cross pollinated etc but I still get the pretty bi-coloured flowers on some plants and get a good, tasty crop each year.

They reckon you need to be about half a mile away from any other variety to keep runners true. However, as others have said, you'll still get a decent crop and you might find you prefer your own variety!
