  • LED growlights

On my travels looking for cucumber seeds, as I realised I had missed buying these, I came agross the idea of growlights. Usually dismissed as far too expensive to buy and run, but then found some LED ones which looked more affordable. Several different versions on ebay, but this one looked reasonable. Don't know if I went for one, whether to choose blue or the mixed blue and red.

LED Grow light board, red/blue spectrum on eBay, also Hydroponics, Plants Seeds Bulbs, Garden Plants, Home Garden (end time 03-Jan-09 13:23:23 GMT)

Anyone have any experience or comments? I would just be looking to light the early tomatoes and chillies indoors, not major growbox type stuff. I have £30 Christmas pressie money but it is precious, and I don't want to mis-spend.

Don't know about growing things with them, but I think they'd look fab in the window instead of xmas lights

It's a bit lacking in info isn't it? Doesn't even mention whether it plugs into a plug socket or a light fitting, what length of cable it has etc.
Sounds interesting, but I'd ask some questions and do some research (Googling) about LEDs as grow lights.

Some of the other links seem to give a bit more info spectrums of the light etc.

Dave on chillis galore has assembled a light box using xmas led lights, mainly blue

(you will have to register to read the thread/see the pictures). I think blue lights are for vegetative growth & red spectrum are for flowering/fruiting.

What colour are the LED's? I've thought about trying this myself.

Perhaps we need to take the tree down early, it's got 2 sets of blue lights on, but we put them on before the decorations, so to get at them it all needs to come off

I brought a red/blue LED bulb, screws in to a light fitting. I started off two sweet banana peppers under it soon as they germinated, moved them on to a window sill (still under the LED too) about a week ago to maximise light.

I sowed the seeds 21/11 they germinated 1/12. Its my first time growing peppers or using LEDs so I don't know if they are doing well or not. They look okay to me though some of the leaves have a lumpy surface, dunno if that's normal to peppers or not?

The Christmas LEDs look fun, might try that!

Your peppers are looking very good for this time of year. Where did you get your bulb from?
My OH suggested converting one of the built in cupboards in our bedroom to a growing cupboard with lights etc. At the moment it is full of old games etc that could be relocated to the attic as the kids aren't interested anymore. It sounds good, but I think the price might be a bit out of my reach at the moment. It would need more than just my Christmas lights methinks. The garden budget is £20 per month, and that is supposed to buy all the seeds, plants, compost etc for the year.
I hasten to add the cupboard would be used for bringing on seedlings in winter and early spring, all legal like, in case anyone gets the wrong idea

Mine came from: http://www.growforfree.co.uk I think the same company sell on ebay/under a few other websites. There didn't seem to be many companies offering different ones. It was £20 for 90 LED Grow Light Bulb plus a free 4w Bulb. Had to get a desk lamp to fit it into too. I think they cover about a foot square so it would be expensive to kit out a cupboard.

Other types of grow lights are cheaper to buy I think, though the LEDs are very cheap electricity wise.

Its fun to have something growing now but probably not that cost effective considering sunshine is free if you wait a bit

I was wondering if you have the lights on all the time of for just, say, 8 hours a day? LED's take very little power. I thought it was UV light from the sun that caused the growth, I cant imagine much UV light from LED's

I've them on for about 12-18, they're not on a timer so it depends on me switching on and off. The scientific explanation is meant to be they use the red/blue spectrum to grow (blue for leaves & red for flowers/fruit production) and that just using those coloured LEDs makes it more efficient.

I'm not sure about UV & photosynthesis, would need to dig out a textbook lol.
