  • Help - glass jars

Does anyone know of a glass jar company where I can get some jars cheap? I was planning on making some preserves for family members and putting them in xmas baskets.
I have has a scroll on the internet and I was astonished to see how much the glass jars are . I think the best I have found is working out at £18.15 for 24 jars with Alacook. It really surprises me how anyone makes any profit at small craft events. If I can not get them any cheaper I may resort to buying supermarkets own jams and using there jars (it will be a hell of a lot cheaper)

I get mine from www.ascott.biz but it would be cheaper to buy value jam from the supermarket just for the jars.

Freeman and Harding are on Ebay but I have put in a shortcut to their website. They charge £19.40 carriage paid for a tray of 33 1lb jam jars. I think you can buy extra jars for £11.95 a tray.

I use them frequently and have found them very efficient.

I'm hoping to do the same Silverfox, but am just asking everyone to save me jars - cheapskate I know but with a pretty bit of material over the lid and a homemade label I reckon they'll look ok. (I hope!)
What are you plannning to make?

I was planning on some pickled Beetroot, Piccalilli, Tomato & Onion Chutney, Green Tomato chutney (I'm sure I'll have some that don't go red - parts of my plant are still in flower). I would have also liked to make some jams but all my strawberrys have gone and the new loganberry bush only has about 5 fruits on it so i think that will only make a teaspoon full.

            How about you? any ideas

I've got a recipe for chilli jelly that I want to try, also pickled chillis (the chillis were more successful than I expected! )

I'd like to try picallilli too. I made green tomato chutney last year which we are still using now and its yummy so maybe some of that as well!

                      Here goes - CHILLI JELLY

                      4oz chilli peppers
                      6oz sweet peppers
                      2.5 lb jam sugar
                      24fl oz cider vinegar

                      1. de-seed chillies and peppers and chop as finely as possible. Lay on a piece of kitchen roll to soak up any juice.
                      2. dissolve sugar in cider vinegar and add chillis and peppers. Bring to a rolling boil.
                      3. Remove the pan from the heat and allow to cool approx 20 mins.
                      4. Let cool, stirring occasionally until the chillis and peppers are suspended in the jelly- this could take 30mins or more.
                      5. ladle into sterilised jars.

                      Makes about 7 x 8oz jars.

Enjoy! I've not tried it yet but its supposed to be good with hot or cold meats, on cheese on toast, put a bit in your gravy if you fancy or whatever!

mmm, just noticed this thread after posting on another one with same subject. Without doubt if you want a quantity to last a while, C Wynne Jones is a nice family run small wholesaler with a new website www.bottlesandjars.co.uk
                        e.g. about 16p for a 12oz jar

Have you thought about going on your local freecycle group and asking for jam jars? Very quick response normally!
