I had a free fig tree from an offer and its now come and am a bit dissapointed! Ok - so its free and I didnt know what to expect but its about 4 inches high!! Think I will go to a few garden centres and have a look at them as I now have got myself all into the idea of one. Looking at this tiny one I have it will take years to fruit! whats the average size of a fig tree which you buy?

I bought one from Wilkinson's at the end of January. It cost a fiver and was about 8 inches tall. It soon put on a growth spurt though and is now around 2 foot tall. Will watch this thread with interest to see how I should be caring for mine now though. The ones I see in our local garden centre are around 3 - 4 foot tall but not in full leaf or anything.Happy Gardening,

Figs can put on a lot of growth, I wouldn't discount getting some fruit this year and certainly next year. Keep it in a pot to constrain the roots as this encourages fruiting.Comment

I bought a fig tree about 8" tall back in Feb. Its in the G/house at present. It has full leaves and two fruits already (plus one that got knocked off)A bad days fishing is still better than a good day at work!

Wow! what size pot have you got it in brook? I got one from Lidl and repotted it to a 6" pot.To see a world in a grain of sand

I got one from Wilco as well. Looked like a little stick when I got it. It's now about 24" high and full of big leaves. Mines in a 12" pot in the back room of the house at the moment.Last edited by esrikandan; 24-04-2008, 10:26 AM.Comment

Mine is in a pot outside and still looks like a stick. It's definitely alive and there are some buds swelling on the sides but I'm getting impatient for it to get leaves. May put in the greenhouse for a few weeks and see if that helps.

Just a quick update. Was checking my fig plant (not big enough to call a tree) this morning and noticed a little fig developing. I didn't notice a flower - did I miss it or don't they flower?Happy Gardening,

Hi Folks,
I got 2 earlier in the year, looked like hb pencils!
They put on a bit of growth but now seem to be withering a bit, should I put them outside or keep them in the house?

I put mine out on nice days Danny. I think they are fully winter hardy but I want my plant to be a bit bigger before it is outdoors all the time.Happy Gardening,

Mine had some little figs on it when I had it delivered but the stem was very bare with no leaves / branches. However, looked yesteaday and noticed some leaves beginning to come so all good and I'll be leaving it in it's sheltered spot by the garage door.

They are supposed to be frost hardy so mine will be out all the time once it has acclimatised. It has stayed out a couple of mild nights but I bring it in if it is very wet or windy at the moment. Won't be long till it is out now.Originally posted by broadway View PostHappy Gardening,

I've moved them from my living room to kitchen to get more light, seem to have improved over the last couple of days!
I reckon I'll put them out each morning for the next fortnight then leave them out permanently.
