  • Allotments in South and West Birmingham

    Hi,

I am looking for a plot somewhere in the south or west of birmingham. I live in harborne and the info that i got from the council was not informative. I used to have a garden and an allotment in another area of the country but have moved to a two bed flat to be close to work and am missing my garden and allotment. I am however on my own so i am looking for a small allotment (or perhaps a share with someone?) as i'll only be growing for myself and i don't like covering everything with black pastic. I don't mind travelling but obvously the closer to home the better. i work quite long hours mon to thursday but have friday afternoons and weekends free. I work on the half hour principle (successfully last year).

Hope you can help - look forward to hearing from anyone soon.

Hi Hazypea and welcome to the Vine!

Sorry to hear that you've found B'ham council less than helpful - when I phoned for info they were ok, and gave me the phone number of the allotment secretary of the two sites I was interested in. Mind you, there contact details were a bit out of date, but hey!

When you say that the council weren't informative, do you mean that they said that the plots are all full, or would they not give out phone numbers of site contacts?

You can always look at the list of the sites on the web site and go and have a look round at the site you like the look of most and ask whoever you see who you should contact - nothing like a visit to get the 'feel' of the place!

Good luck with it - let us know how you get on.

Hi Hazel. Just read your message. If you are not already sorted we have plenty of spare plots on the Wychbury Road Allotments in Bartley Green which is not far from Harborne. There must be about 10 - 15 vacant plots which we have been trying to get the Council to let for ages. It is disappointing if they have not suggested you check it out. If still interested you should ring them and ask for an appointment to have a look around. Best of luck. Anyone else interested come and join us!!!!

Hello HazyPea and Geoff, its nice to have two more neighbours.

There is at least one plot free on the site I am on - Hurst Mill in Cotteridge which is sort of close. Let me know if you want the contact details of the secretary.

            Hi Hazypea,

If you visit Birmingham City Council - Home Page and search allotments, you will find a page to enter your postal details. This is what I did. I was sent an information pack containing details of local allotment wards and the contact telephone numbers of the secretaries or liason officer responsible. There are 3 allotment sites in Harborne, one in Woeley Castle and Bartley Green. Good Luck!

                a few years on

                Hi everyone,

I've been searching online for more help on how to rent an allotment in Harborne (or nearby!)

I'm new to the area and am craving some outdoor space for growing my own veggies. I appreciate this thread was started some time ago now and times may have changed however as I'm struggling to get an answer from the council I was wondering if anyone is able to help? It would be much appreciated!

                Many thanks!

I found the allotment service of the council not very helpful - it's easier to get in touch with the allotment sites directly (they're now more self-sufficient anyway, rather than managed by the council).

My allotment site in harborne (Harborne Hill) might still have a few plots going - it's always worth enquiring.

This is the website: Harborne Hill Allotments Home Page
