  • Runner and French Beans as pulses.

Does anyone know if runner and french bean seeds are any good for cooking,I have a large crop as I never got round to picking the pods!

French bean seeds are haricot beans (baked beans if you add tomato sauce!) - we freeze ours when podded. Lots of folk dry them and then use them (I think frozen ones taste better).

    Don't know bout runners.

I've occasionally used gone-over runner seeds - if you get home from hols and find bulging beans they are ok to use fresh. I've not tried drying them to use though. I do with yin-yang and some of the french but I've stopped growing runners. I prefer french beans.

I dry most of my French beans to use in chillis, curries, nut loafs (?) etc. For a proper red "kidney" bean, try growing Canadian Wonder.
