  • New gardener - what to grow now?

I have recently moved soemwhere with a garden and would love to start growing herbs, veg and fruit, What kind of things should I be planting in february?

What do you want to grow? How much space do you have? Is your ground ready?

Raspberry canes are on sale at the moment and most fruit bushes will be available as bare root for the next couple of months. Fruit trees too.

As for veg from seed - it is early days yet...do you have anywhere to start seeds off?

This thread is where other grapes post what they have just sown.

This is an a-z guide for growing fruit and veg:

If you sign up to receive GYO newsletter you will get regular emails on what to sow when:

This will give you an idea on what you can sow each month

It depends what part of the country you are, growing in containers, in ground, under cover etc.

Make a list of things you like, and then you can look more into each one.
Anything is possible with the right attitude, a hammer
and a roll of duct tape.

How big is your grow garden? What do you enjoy eating? These are the most important questions. Do you have a greenhouse? Salad leaves are always important to me (staggered). Homegrown tomatoes and cucumber taste amazing, so does really fresh sweetcorn. It's always a balance between available space, the things you really enjoy and available time.

Lots of sensible answers already... Decide what you like to eat, and find the thread for that example "your tomato grow list for 2020" or cucumbers " Sowing all things Cucurbit - 2020" that will give you an idea of the named varieties we like to grow.

Don't grow what you don't like, and if you LOVE stuff, does it make sense to grow it? example, it would take up my entire growing space to grow a cauliflower for every week of the year and just 1 or 2 is not worth it because would mean the loss of space for another tomato plant or a container of spuds which is much more productive.

You can grow herbs indoors all year round, and more adventurous growers than I are already sowing bush tomatoes.
The 2020 GYO year planner suggests sowing for Feb (depending on type):
              broadbeans
              Carrot
              Leeks
              onion/shallot
              pea
              chili
              aubergine
              brussels sprout
              cabbage
              tomatoes

              and planting out
              Rhubarb
              Garlic
              Fruit trees and bushes.

Good luck, hopefully you will post pictures of your successes
              V.P.
