  • Carolus seed potatoes don't appear for 2020

I ordered 4 bags of Carolus from Bridgend Garden Centre but they now inform me that they are not available. Looking at other suppliers, nobody seems to have them at a reasonable price. Unless anyone has a link the where they can be obtained, I'll probably need to go through my remaining store and pick out some likely tubers to use.
I was thinking of saving my own from this year on. I would plant tubers in land unused for potatoes before and cover them with fleece to keep aphids off. probably plant them quite close to stop them growing too big. I was thinking I would only need a small area for this as may be 2 or 3 tubers of each variety I want. Does anyone else save their own potato seed and if so what do you do?

I couldn't get Carolus seed spuds either. I normally get them from Dundry nurseries but they've told me there was a complete crop failure. Shame, I really liked them

Seems odd there was a complete failure as mine did very well (for me). I've sorted 2kg out of one bag so will get another 2kg from the rest and put them to chit. If I do come cross any for sale, I'll get a few to use for seed to propagate for future years.

It looks as if DT Brown still have them.. at about their usual price.

DTbrown a bit dear for me as I have everything else I need for the year. It would cost £17 for 3kg when ideally I would like 4kg. From Bridgend, with my other potatoes, it was £7.20 as last year.

I was just saying that it couldn't have been a complete crop failure if other places are still selling them lol
Appreciate that DTB aren't the cheapest suppliers..

Didn't this happen last with another variety? One of the Sarpos maybe? The big boys snaffled up all of the remaining seed leaving the smaller suppliers with no stock.

in wilkos at a £1 for 5 spuds for those that must have them. OK price for those only wanting a few, though would be getting up there in cost if you wanted a lot.

FYI last year DT couldn't supply the Axona sarpo, due to storage failure.

I'll have a look in wilcos - 4 or 5 spuds would be enough to grow seed stock for next year. But I wont b able to get there for a couple of weeks.

I was just about to say that I was sure I'd seen them in my local Wilko today

Shall I get you a couple of bags and post them out to you?

I've been through and selected about 4kg of smallish potatoes which I think should be fine to grow. My order of other varieties is due to arrive tomorrow from the wilds of Scotland. I'll check they are roughly similar sized.
