  • A year on the windowsill.

Yesterday an elderly relative was moaning about how tasteless and expensive tomatoes from the supermarket are. In Summer she gets a continuous supply from us. In Winter we use our oven roast frozen ones but we do not give these away (we would need yet another freezer if we did).
I offered to give her some early tomato seedlings to grow on one or more of her sunny south facing windowsills. She declined the offer, but then she is very neat and tidy. Not a thing out of place.
This made me reflect on the changing messy state of my lounge windowsill ( and others), from potatoes chitting at the moment, to seedlings in a few weeks right through to tomatoes ripening in Autumn. I have decided to take a photo of my messiness every month.
Please post yours and then I won't feel too scruffy (maybe).
Here is this months: January - potatoes chitting.

That 2nd picture, Jane, looks good enough to frame and hang up.

You could probably make a fortune selling them as "modern art"

I wonder if they'll still grow this year if you plant them?

My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

Yes, there does look a lot. I ' m starting to wonder if I've overdone it but I start pulling the first earlies when they are little and we get through them very quickly. Two of the five trays are first earlies.
Every year when I am doing the back breaking jobs of planting and earthing up I start to wish I had bought less. But right now with a sack and a half of potatoes still left to use I am happy. If they start to threaten to sprout I'll give some away.

I am restricted to having my ""messy stuff" in the dining room. So the shelving from the blow away GH gets set up around now in front of the patio window, with the Heated Prop. and foil reflectors. In fact I am off to do it now. (thinking that he might not notice the potatoes chitting in the spare room tho?!!)

It's love me, love my plants in our house. Grow lights in the living room, extra wide windowsill for the plants..... Though with OH, it's love him, love his bikes. We had to get a garage when we moved house so he had somewhere to keep them all.

OH would grab one of my rifles and shoot me if I even suggested using the windowsill... not a tolerant girl!

I'm sure I've been through the same thing with overly-chitted spuds! They did grow but were pathetic little things. Don't rely on them to make a plate of chips.

Just remembered that I also tried growing spuds from chits - known as the NP40 experiment! Photo on an old abandoned Blog I had once. https://gigglingintwogardens.blogspo...l#comment-form

The very straggly looking plants on the left were sown in January 2019 and are almost finished, with just a few tomatoes from the 3rd flush which are ready to eat. The ones on the right were sown in March and some are producing a few more flowers for their 3rd flush of fruit, which may or may not set.

Amazing...and fantastic! Have these plants been inside on your windowsill all summer, or did you bring them in?
