  • Something for nothing, make do and mend

As an aside from the craft thread,i thought it apropriate to have a thread for recyling what you no longer want into something usefull,to give others ideas,so i start you off.......

Unused pillow case into a shopping bag,it can be washed, and rolled up to fit in a pocket or hand bag,so you have one ready when needed, also last longer than plastic, and none else will have the same as you,the measurements can be what you like to suit your needs.

Your bag is brill! I use old clean t shirts to wipe the floor with. I collect old mini greenhouse frames to make use of their parts and joints to make cloches and other smaller mini greenhouses. Any old colourful clothes and buttons can be used to make soft toys and cushions, and can be used for their stuffing too
Glass vases and bowls are lovely for making Christmas displays with, especially amaryllis, add some some stones at the bottom, then some compost, then the amaryllis bulb and any decorations lying around

I have a project running for years.
Dont know if I will ever get it finished.
Some of my late mother and aunt ts clothes and aprons thry made themselves.
Some colourful shirts my son wore and blouses belonging to my daughter.
I am slowly making a patchwork quilt from these.
All hand sown but I will go over the joining with the machine when its finished.
I think it's a great way to keep memories alive.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

My late mother inlaw god bless her, used to make peg rugs with cut up old fabric,as did lots of peeps years gone by.
As beds get bigger ,you can end up with the quilt covers to small, cut a chunk off 1 side and you got a single 1,if you cut down the side with the crease in,you can open the remaining fabric out,and get extra pillow slip.
I have bed linnen that i cannot use again, like peach and pink, devan covers and sheets with the devan frill on,i plan on doing a few more pinnies, also good if you need some fabric to use as a dress pattern to get the correct fitting.
if the color or pattern suitable, cushion covers, table runners and mats, bibs for messy eaters, the list goes on.

I always start with make do and mend - usually reliant on stuff from the piles of junk I keep around the place. I used a roll of wallpaper the other day to cover some insulation board - the board was an 8×4' sheet of Celotex I fished out of a skip some years ago and the wallpaper (still in its polythene wrapping) dates back to about 50 years ago, as some of a lot my mother bought for her house and which I cleared out when she died.

(It is for putting between a bed and a wall which can be a bit cold in winter, in case anyone is puzzled)

PS I made the glue/paste out of self-raising flour and water with some salt mixed in to discourage mould.

I have done the pillow case bags and use them for hanging those peg sock hanger dryer. It stops all the pegs getting stuck in things.
They also have come in handy to wrap DDs birthday presents.

              I love the shopping bags
Earlier this year I used some old curtain fabric to make smaller bags for fruit and veg. Modelled on the size of paper bags you used to get at the greengrocers, they are perfect for buying and storing fruit and veg.

Yesterday I made another peg bag with bits from the 'old curtains and clothes' stash I keep. It will be an xmas tree present for someone

I tend to sort the bits into matching patterns/colours and make patchwork quilts when there are enough of them.

I like making my own wooden handles for tools etc - I also made some wooden spoons, spatulas .... for the kitchen - makes me feel better about having bought a second-hand lathe as a toy :-)

Good thread LD. I usually adapt things to fit other purposes when required

I also use clean shirts to wipe shelves, worktops and various other things, OH isn't always happy with that as I am usually wearing the shirt at the time
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

                          Today’s efforts are fairly modest...
repairing an A-Z file with brown paper and glue, and reusing a supermarket mincemeat jar for storing pudding rice I bought from the weigh shop.

A lot of old stuff can be re-used directly in the garden of course - feathers are high in nitrogen (from cushions, pillows or duvets), so make a good base at the bottom of a hole where a tree or bush is to be planted - - put earth on before the tree roots as you don't want air pockets. Obviously old tights or stockings make good tree ties and old telephone or computer cables tied together make good support wires for raspberry canes.

Buckets and flexi trugs with missing handles make great large plant pots (as do MFB).
I also sawed off the bottom half of a leaky water butt and added a few more holes with a big drill bit to make a large tub for mint to stop it spreading too far
