I was chatting to a young female relative about soldering something. "Oh, we learned how to solder at school", she said. I am so happy that eventually there is equality. When I was at school we girls were taught Domestic Science. No woodwork or metalwork just cookery and sewing in which, at the time, I had no interest. It was many years later when I was eventually let loose with power tools.
What, I wondered, were the things I'm glad I learned at school.
Languages were one. French, German and Latin which then helped with others languages and broadened my very limited horizons.
How to wire up a plug in probably my first physics lesson. Very useful.
Maths. I hate to admit this but when I wanted to work out angles to cut wood to redeck a boat I dredged up some old facts from the dim and distant past. It worked.
Most of the other useless information I learned, particularly history I would still consider useless.
