    Planning permission for a shed

    I am recycling an old shed from someone who has given up their plot and rent my allotment from the Town Council. Whilst constructing it the other day the Environment Officer asked me whether I had applied for permission from the Allotment Committee. She told me to read my Agreement for clarification.

    The relevant clause states

    Tenants may erect a small shed or greenhouse to the approved specification detailed below, subject to the appropriate planning permissions being obtained from both the M****n Town Council and Planning Department, M****n District Council.”

    So no request to ask for permission from the Committee, in fact the first six words give me that permission I felt I need, but have any of you in similar situations had to ask for planning permission for a 6' x 4' wooden shed laid on four concrete slabs?

    I think the rule is just there to make sure everyone acts withing moderation and to cover them. You just know that if it wasn't there someone would be building some weird eyesore that no-one else wants to see.

      We can erect a small shed, but have to confirm with site rep where we are going to put it. Make sure it doesn't shade other plots, that kind of thing. Same for greenhouses and polytunnels.
      I'm sure if you give the council a ring they'd be ok with a 6 x 4 standard wooden shed.

        If you have to get the planning department involved expect it to take a millennium and have to jump through many many ridiculous hoops.

          This is exactly my fear. I tried ringing the Planning Department three times. Apparently there is no one there to answer calls. An email promises a reply within seven working days.

            One of the plot holders on my previous site was contacted by the Council and told to take down his recently erected small shed or he would be thrown off the site.
            He had apparently contravened rules he was not aware of and the site committee had informed the Council.
            My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
            to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)

                Pitty the committee didn't feel a quite chat first would have helped rather than resort to a blunderbuss.

                We can have a 6x4 of wooden/conventional construction on the concrete plinth provided by the landlords.

                I'm thinking if this is a shed moved from one plot to another, the only question will be in relation to it's location since it has already been found of acceptable size and construction. Under normal law a temporary out building under one story high and (iirc) 20 feet does not require any planning consent. However since this is council property they may have special considerations. It's always best to ask the correct proceedures to avoid upset down the line.

                  Unless in a conservation area Garden Buildings are considered Permitted Development and do NOT require planning permission as long as: The building is to be placed less than 2.0m from the boundary of the property with a maximum overall height of no more than 2.5m from existing ground level.

                    My old site you could only have 6x4 greenhouse or shed and it had to be in a set place on each allotment. I think this was done to stop causing shadows and for fairness. Never heard of planning permission for a shed.

                      Wrong end of plot, apparently.

                      It was a previous committee who allowed the scrapheap/shanty.

                        We have to apply to the committee to erect any greenhouse, polytunnel or shed, and no-one is allowed to build out of old doors/windows etc, 'to avoid a ramshackle appearance.' I don't think they're fussy about siting the thing. Also only allowed generic dull green colour (or brown) on all wood.
                        Shame, cos I was thinking Hello Kitty pink....

                          You are unlikely to need planning permission from your Local Planning Authority but many allotment sites have specific rules about sheds and greenhouses.
