  • First frost date 2019/20...for your records

I see that some regions have the possibility for their first frost of the 'winter'

so, I thought I'd create this thread again for your own records

here is last year's thread so you can compare....

According to the maps my first frost isn't until 11th- 20th December - which seems a bit late to me I'll have to make a note of when we get the first this year

This is who I use, was pretty accurate for this year and last...

          https://www.gardenfocused.co.uk/adjust-dates-uk.php

1st frost seems to have disappeared from the site this year. I work to around 5th November, and my plane to somewhere warm is booked for the 4th!

GYO to try to offset my winter holiday carbon load.

I think the maps a bit out of date or very town based, rural areas round here, granted a fair bit higher than me, have had a light frost already. I recorded 5 degrees inside my greenhouse on Sunday and some of my plants are showing the adverse signs from the temps.

I live in Yeovil, in the town centre, and my first ground frost is usually late November (usually not until early December on the patio, as it's enclosed on all sides).
My new allotment is slightly more exposed (although still town centre), so I'd probably expect it to be more like mid-November there.
First air frost, with temperatures actually below freezing, is not until at least mid-December, and often not until after Christmas.

Thanks for this Nicos, hadn’t seen the map before. We’re 1-10th December, though I’m sure it’s usually earlier than that.

I like the Gardenfocused one too - it has my town by name . Have you ever used the planner on there VP?

Thanks to the link to last year's thread, Nicos. Looks like we're in a similar position to last year. We've had no frosts yet, but nights cold enough to finish off the beans, melons, squash and at least one of the courgette plants. The peppers and tomatoes are still holding out. So maybe this is a pattern.

I know the tom plants suffer most years late September, after which it tends to warm up a bit for a couple of weeks before first frosts hit around mid October. But I hadn't noticed a pattern in early September weather. I maybe need to rethink some of my growing habits, campaign for a greenhouse of some variety...

My tomato plants were still outside October 31st last year,it’s always cold Halloween night, the first frost is somewhere around there, noticed by blackened dahlia leaves but don’t remove them, they protect the rest of the plant from the cold.

Sadly the BBC weather app. looks like Saturday night is dropping to 6c around this way, still around 10c for the next couple of weeks so everything is slowing down. At this rate I may well get all the beds cleared away, before I fly off. I thought I would try lasagne mulching (have access to plenty cardboard boxes) and empty out the years collection in my compost.
I am off to Madeira, first time. Planning on making some headway into the wine stocks
