  • Spicy Blackberry Chutney

After last years bramble disater I'm delighted to see that they are turning black this year. Instead of making just jelly and jam I fancied trying some chutney. Will be trying this recipe if anyone else fancies giving it a go:

    Spicy Blackberry Chutney

    500g blackberries
    140g caster sugar
    140g red onions , sliced
3 tbsp chopped fresh root ginger
    2 tbsp Dijon mustard
    150ml white wine vinegar

Combine all the ingredients, except the vinegar, in a large saucepan. Stir mixture over medium heat until the blackberries burst. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Add the vinegar and allow the mixture to simmer uncovered for 10 mins. Cool, transfer to a sterilised jar and seal immediately.

I think I may throw a lemon into the pan to help it set.

Ooh yes I like the sound of that, thanks Amanda
There are so many wild blackberries this year I fancied doing something more than jelly with them.

Sounds good. I don't really like blackberries in pies or as jam etc but this combo of flavours sounds much more interesting.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom

There was a similar blackberry recipe (hedgerow chutney) in the GYO Jams booklet too. It was by HFW so might be elsewhere too? Or if pressed I could type the recipe up...

...edit, just read it and its got chillies in it too!!!

            Hot Hedgerow Chutney

            Hot Hedgerow Chutney

            2 tbsp olive oil
            2 finely chopped red onions
2-3cm finely chopped stem ginger, to taste
2 de-seeded, finely chopped large red chillis
            1kg blackberries
            90g caster sugar
            60ml red wine vinegar

In a heavy-based saucepan or preserving pan gently heat the olive oil.

Add the red onion, ginger and chilli and cook gently for 4-5 minutes until softened.

Add the blackberries to the pan and cook for a further 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Add the caster sugar and red wine vinegar to the mixture and stir well, making sure everything is combined.

Bring to the boil, and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until reduced and thickened.

Whilst still hot, funnel into hot, sterilised jars. Cover with waxed discs and allow the contents to cool before sealing with a lid.

Store for 3 months before eating to help the flavours mature and mellow.

That's the HFW/GYO 2-Sheds, thanks for typing that in, might give it a go - chillied blackberries sounds interesting! Think I'll use fresh ginger not stem ginger though, wonder if that was a 'typo'?

dunno, I just copy-and-pasted. I don't like ginger anyway ... I just put in a pinch of the dried stuff that's been in my cupboard since 1972

I thought I'd give this a go, and asked my OH to pick up some stem ginger, and he bought a jar of Tesco Finest Stem Ginger Preserve , so I haven't done it yet. I will probably use the root ginger too.

If anyone has fresh ginger but they want stem ginger, I adapt a recipe from the Grow Your Own Drugs book for crystallised ginger, which basically cooks the fresh ginger in a sugar syrup. If anyone is interested I can post up the recipe...

I picked 3kg of blackberries yesterday and have made some backberry/apple jam with some, (and it worked...) blackberry/apple pies with some more but still have loads left....so hedgerow chutney is ideal as I have loads of chillis! Thanks for posting it

By the way how did anyone get on with fresh ginger?

Used fresh ginger (chopped) instead of stem, also added chopped apples and more vinegar & sugar...was very popular with folk who tried it.

Thanks Smallblueplanet. What ratio did you add apples to it?
