    Hi, ive had a first time attempt at crab apple jelly but there isnt a lot of juice dripping out, i know im to leave it over night but ive only got half a pint of juice so far and its been hours. Is this normal? I used a kg of apples.

    How much water did you add to them when you cooked them? It's usual to add water to the roughly chopped apples in the pan until they are completely covered, and simmer gently (not boil rapidly) until the apples are soft, which takes between 10 and 20 minutes. That way the apples cook but you don't lose too much by evaporation.

      Hi mothhawk, i added enough water to cover them,and once boiling i reduced to a simmer for about 25 mins until mushy. Hmmm maybe i'll have to wait until tommorow, i didnt want to squeeze the bag as i didnt want it to be cloudy.

        It may be that your apples just aren't juicy! A little under ripe maybe? You can try reboiling the pulp again, using half the amount of water that you used the first time. I often do that with apples and black currants.
        And you're right, don't be tempted to squeeze that bag!!

            It seems a little early for crab apples. The ones on the tree in my garden are still green. When ripe they are completely red. However you are a little further South than me so perhaps they are ripe!

              I'm also in Wilts, mine usually aren't ready till end Sept beginning of Oct....could be the variety?
