  • Has anyone ever cooked/eaten acorns?

I was always led to believe that acorns were poisonous but recently found a recipe for acorn flour. Has anyone every tried them and if so what do they taste like?

They were eaten a lot here during the war.
You can buy roasters still to turn infront of an open fire. They're mostly used for chestnuts now- but if you ask an 'oldie' what the contraption is- they all say it's for roasting acorns

I believe you have to bury them in soil for a while to get rid of the bitterness. I'll look it up in a book I have.

But why would you? You'd have to be fairly clemmed to even try!

At the risk of being ridiculed.......If you peel and slightly crush/break acorns and soak overnight in a big pan of water then strain in the morning this removes most of the tannin, then heat over the fire/gas stove in a pan so they roast to a light chocolate brown.
crush small and add to 50:50 mixture of milk /water and boil, strain&add sugar to taste, tastes like a cross between bad coffee and good hot chocolate.Rather an aquired taste, but have made it with scouts on backwoods weekends 6-7 times (nobody died yet)
