  • Handy jam making tip

I'm guessing those of you that are more experienced already know this little tip but it made me happy so going to share it.... Crab Apples
Found loads growing in our local park & could'nt resist picking them even tho i had no idea what to do with them. Today i made blacberry Jam for the first time ever & on the advice of nan added the crabapples (instead of cooking apples) to the mix. It set amazingly with hardly any boiling.
So impressed with how easy they made jam making that i'm back off to the park tomorrow to pick a load more so that i can make a rose hip jelly

I usually cook the crabs as if I'm making crab apple jelly and then add the strained juice to a jam. Really helps with setting but you don't get any fiddly bits in the jam.
