Cheap pickling jars!

    Cheap pickling jars!

    Shopping in Asda last night and found kilner style jars, not sure of the amount they hold, but are quite big, maybe 2lb size for £1!!
    I'm using them as tea, coffee, sugar containers but thought the'd be really useful for piclking all this extra produce we all have ?!
    Gonna get some more today.

    thanks for the heads up, sounds a good price! i went to asda to get extra jars for jam making. i did look a bit odd buying 10 jars of asda price beetroot lol but for 24p per jar it worked out cheaper then buying empty jars!

      Just be careful if you're using pickle jars to put jam in. It can be very very difficult to get rid of the smell of vinegar from the lids. DIL refused to eat the jar of blackberry and apple jelly I gave her last year cos it smelt of vinegar. Son said it was only the lid that smelt and the jelly was lovely.

        I always save jars through the year and don't buy many but I like the clip top lids and I know I'll re-use them.(If I don't give them away as pressies)

          yeah i had to give them a good few washes thru the dish washer as they still smelt of pickled beetroot!

            Hi . Will these jars be ok to put hot jam in . It hasn't got anything in the description except storage jar .

              I've bought a couple of the ASDA jars and they're not 100% water tight so I wouldn't use them for preserves. They're fine to use as a general storage jar but they leaked when I shock up some raspberry vodka which I was infusing so be careful. They might not all be dodgy but at that price I wouldn't hold my breath, always a problem with the cheaper versions of the proper kilner jars.

                I'm buying up Tesco pickled onions (31p) just for the jars, for chutney. We're eating pickled onions with everything (I'm also reusing the vinegar)

                  as alison says they leak!!!! wilko have got genunie kilner at £2.49

                    Asda Mild Curry Sauce - their very cheapest one is 9p per jar for 440g - lovely 1lb jars for jams, chutneys etc. The sauce is pretty disgusting - but at 9p it is cheap enough to throw away! This was a great tip from Sewer Rat. I went and bought 10 .... so much cheaper than buying jars from the Jam Jar Shop.

                      On a similar vane........I buy mint sauce from T*sc*s for 15p, just to use the jars.
                      If you don't want to be wasteful put all the mint sauce in a big jar!

                            I went to Asda today, but didn't see any of that!!! Mind you, I did get a coolbox for £1.50, and a trolley barbecue for £2.50.

                              Thanks everyone I think I will play safe and buy kilner jars . Dont want to waste any of my home grown or all that loverly sloe vodka that is coming soon
