  • Cabbage

I have never tried cabbage, call it a school thing but last night I had an epiphany - feeling a little slowed down by the season and lack of veg, we threw caution to the wind (and cabbage does effect this) and tried salmon on a bed of savoy cabbage, spinach and onions, fried in butter. I tell you it was really lovely and if I had more space I would grow them.

Why don't you try the miniature cabbage - I think it's called something like "Protovoy" and a mature specimen will fit in the palm of your hand. Can't remember a supplier but do seem to recall that it is a savoy type.

andrewo- do grow some -even in your flower bed!!! Savoy and red are so tasty...if you want a seed or two let me know and will pop them in the post for you--never liked them much as a kid but now quite enjoy them! ( not as much as carrots ; sweetcorn ; french beans; onions; kale;.... but still more than sprouts and broad beans!!).Taste buds mature with age ...I think!! bit like a good wine or beer!!

Cabbage saved my life as a kid growing up in the late 60's and early seventies.
My mother was rather ill for years and my main source of food was free school meals. There was always seconds of Cabbage and gravy. and thirds and fourths etc.
          God I LOVE cabbage!!!

Savoy is our favourite (or crinkly as the kids call it) it has so much more surface area to coat in gravy And bubble & squeak, oh heaven.

                Baby cabbage

                Andrewo
Here are various varieties of cabbage that can be grown as baby / miniatures from a couple of my seed catalogues
Dobies - Savoy Cabbage "Protovoy", Summer Cabbage "Puma", Savoy Cabbage "Chirimen"
Thompson & Morgan - Cabbage "Shelta, Red Cabbage "Redcap"
                Suttons - Savoy Cabbage "Protovoy"

My personal choice would always be the savoy cabbage - we eat two a week up here.

Are you saying that savoys are tastier than such as Greyhound or Hispi? I ask because it's ages since I've eaten savoy cabbage.

I'd choose a savoy type cabbage over all the others any day of the week. Nothing wrong with other cabbages, but the Savoy is King.

My fave way with cabbage, is to either steam or boil until tender, about halfway through cooking add some fennel seeds. Drain and then serve tossed with butter - delicious! (Had it for tea tonight - again!) dexterdog
