  • demijohn breaking - help

Hi advice needed - one of the demijohns we got from that amazing lady the other day broke as I gently put it on the ground.

I am now a bit worried that as they have been left outside they are all a bit fragile.

Does glass get affected by frost?
Ought I not to use them?

I have cleaned one up and it seems fine but don't really want them breaking randomly all over the place especially when I get them filled!

Thoughts please on glass that's been left outside?

well, windows are outside all year round.
Perhaps that demijohn had been dropped and had a tiny crack that you didn't notice?

I think they should be fine if they hadnt held any liquid.
Glass that holds liquid over winter, that then freezes and melts etc etc can (no scientist but I think this is right) become weaker.

Put some water in them and place in a bucket or bowl and leave for a few days, any that do break will be contained in bucket / bowl. No mess to clean up.

If ever you are short of demi-johns go to your local re-cycling centre. Ours sell them for 50p each.
