  • Alcoholic gooseberry drink

Can anybody help? Long time ago, GW did one of their 'specials' from allotment/s and one of the members had made a very alcoholic gooseberry drink, can't call it wine, as I seem to remember it had got somethig 'odd' in it, I seem to remember milk being mentioned??? PLEASE tell me it's not a senior moment we recorded it on sky +, but didn't realise that when we cancelled it, we lost all the saved progs!! (That really WAS a senior moment!!) Anyway, hope someone else saw it and can at least give me a hint!!
    Thanks in advance

I remember the programme - an interesting slice of allotment life!

If I remember correctly the drink was made by boiling and sieving the gooseberries, adding condensed milk to sweeten, vanilla, Guiness and then rum!
Strange combination? but the allotment officer who sampled it found it good and drank the lot.

I think this may be the recipe - (nabbed from another forum, shhh)
gooseberries - liquidised then strained off to get the juice
      condensed milk
bit of sugar if you want it extra sweet
      vanilla essence
      grated nutmeg
half can of guiness / stout
little bit of rum (if you want to preserve it!!)
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

That's it - I think! I remember it sounded really odd, but everybody raved about it and we like the weird and wonderful (I'm weird, my hubby's wonderful??) Thank you so much for the recipe, I'll file it for use later on when the goosegogs are in full swing, better go out now and check they're in rood health and give them a bit of a talking to!!
        Thanks again!

I'm not sure whether Trousers would curse you or thank you for that recipe, because he loves Guinness (other Stouts ARE available kiddy-winkies!), but professes not to like Goosegoggs at all.

On account of the fact that I've got every Gooseberry, Worcesterberry and Chokerberry still frozen in my chest freezer since Pigletwillie, Mrs. Pigletwillie, Trousers and I picked them last year, I'm here to Thank You! and I look forward to trying it. X

Trouble is, folks, we don't have the quantities - so the more experienced amongst us can work it out according to instinct and taste, the novices will need some more detail than this! Please keep us posted!!

May I suggest 3lb gooseberries, 1lb sultanas, mince/mash add 2lb sugar pour over 6pts boiling water, allow to cool add 1tsp pectolase, leave covered for 24hrs, add 1tsp nutrient, vit B tablet and Hock type yeast/champagne yeast, ferment for 6-7 days, strain through fine mesh bag, put into demi john top up to shoulder and fit airlock, allow to ferment to dry, siphon off into clean DJ leave to settle/clear, rack again and allow to mature, 3-6 months.
Eat well, live well, drink moderately and be happy (hic!)
