  • Hello from the sunny North East

Hi chaps, I've just joined the site after a recommendation from another member. I'm a reasonably experienced - although not always very successful - gardener who lives in Gateshead in the North East. My garden is very steep, seven terraces on an exposed west-facing hillside with poor stony soil, scouring winds and 34 steps up from the house to the greenhouse which makes hauling bags of compost very hard work! I'm a reasonably fit early-50's girlie but as the mind wanders the legs take the strain 'cos my secateurs always seem to be at the opposite end of the stairs to me

I'm working hard on improving the soil quality and had a bit more success with my veggies this year by using fleece protection early in the season but I must confess to being disheartened when I see the much better results my friend gets from her 'ground level' plot just around the corner

I'd love to hear from anyone else who has similar challenges but mostly I'm just looking forward to getting inspiration from the rest of you and, hopefully, adding a bit of my own experience

Hi and welcome.. dont matter what day it is, my productivity is always down.
By back garden is very shallow on a bed a clay. I have just put a dollop of hos muck, shreaded paper and hops down on the veg patch so the worms can do thier best in the winter.
In the spring i will put in mushroom compost when the cabbages will grow.

Hello kitty. Welcome to the vine. We're you born in the early fifties? Great era for rock n roll! How cool.

                  I was a decade later.

                  Have fun on the vine.

                  Loving my allotment!

Hi Kittiwake and welcome from Sunny South Wales (but not today). As a gardener with a few more added years to you and 58 steps to my front door and another 70 or so to the top of the garden, may I recommend two pairs of secateurs, one at both ends!

Ah, I've tried that but they ended up in the same place! Sounds like you need a pet donkey to ferry everything up and down for you. Do you have lots of terraces or is it mainly a slope?

Noooo, I'm a late '50's baby but now in my early 50's so rock and roll passed me by. My earliest memory of a song was Cilla Black (but I try to block that out!)
