  • Hello from Shropshire

Good morning and happy Easter to everyone!

Just a quick introduction and a hello to everyone.

Having purchased a house that needed internal and external love over 5 years ago, my journey into gardening and growing came quickly and full blast.

In a thread for another day, here we are we are after planting 1000 hedge plants, 12 large fruit trees about 50 tonnes of soil, 10 tonnes of compost and 20 chickens later.

Having dabbled in a small raised bed full of raspberries, gooseberries, beans and courgettes, I ended up with a surprise greenhouse purchase that we've been building over the last few days. It needed a lot of TLC, but the Father in law loves a project, and his skills where needed quite a few times to make new unique parts to fit the house.

Having been a reader of the forums for a while, I've ended up with a seeds galore ready to be planted in the coming days.

Fingers crossed we can get all the glass/plastic in tomorrow and have a fully working greenhouse for April.

Welcome - sounds like you have made a good start on what is a huge amount of work - just one mention for something you may have already considered, fit in some rain-water butts for your greenhouse if you can - I like to plumb mine in to a trough with a ball-cock on it so I can dip fill my cans.

                Thanks everyone.

It's been pretty much non stop, we added a 2 year old and a 5 month baby to the mix just to make things even harder!

I went crazy with water butts early on as we have a double garage too, six full waterbutts waiting to be used as I type, two a meter away from the greenhouse, so will look to see as time passes if another one or two are better sited there.

Another option if convenient, would be to run a length of pipe underground from you existing water-butts to a holding tank inside the greenhouse. This has the advantage that the water in the tank inside the greenhouse will get warmed up naturally and also does not need to be inconveniently big. You just need the butts to be higher than the tank for gravity feed and a ball-cock at the tank end.

                        Welcome FFD

Sounds like a lot of work, but if you're lucky enough to have a very large garden, that's the kind of work many people would enjoy if they had more space.

Look forward to your regular contributions and progress reports.

You’re going to be busy but I think very happy too.
Your babies will grow up getting brilliant healthy additions to their diets. And being outside in contact with the Earth will be good for them too. I remember one year sending a basket with some veggies in to my daughter’s P1 class at harvest time. Not one child in the class recognised a runner bean or a yellow courgette. I think that’s sad.
                          Your children will do better.
