  • Hello from the North East

    Hi Everyone,

Just joined the site as it seems a friendly place to exchange gardening banter, and full of useful info from members.

I got into gardening a couple of years ago as a way to relax after a stressful day at work, and started off with an Apache chilli. I've given up on the Apaches for various reasons but am now coaxing along a jalapeno plant (great all rounder), hungarian hot wax (for a bit of a kick and massive pods), cherry bomb (this thing wants to take over the place), and a bulgarian carrot (bit of a kick apparently and bright orange pods, hence the name).

Since then I've broadened out a bit, and grown quite a few strawberries in that time, a mango sapling that sadly died, and a few types of flowers.

To help my chillies thrive I've spent a lot of effort on their summer home - I've got a pimped up mini wooden greenhouse, fully insulated/bubble wrapped and sealed and furnished with two mini tube heaters, an auto vent opener on the roof, and a wireless thermometer linked to the house.

I've just moved the chillies into their winter home, which is inside the house, I've got a wooden shoe rack off which hangs three 4-foot high output T5 fluorescent tubes, these cost just over a fiver a month to run, and based on last year's results the chillies seem to thrive under them. They have a corner in my lounge, and it's worth the effort to have something fluorishing in the house over winter. Last December I got about 50 pods off a jalapeno I was growing.

I will post a thread in Vegging Out to show the chillies.

    Tim

Thanks, I just posted some pictures in this thread: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ml#post1492627

I have given up on coaxing the chillies along outside for now as their spot outside is only getting 3 hours of sun this time of year. It's in my back yard and effectively enclosed on two sides by the house and the fence. The heaters in the mini greenhouse can give an extra 17 Celsius if needed so if I had a sunnier spot they should still be thriving outside. They're only 140 watts in total but in such a small space keep it toasty.

I used to live in Plymouth, nice part of the world in Devon. I would welcome the extra couple of degrees down there at this time of year to help keep the plants ticking along.

        Cheers,
        Tim

Thanks! Yes it's good to see how other chilli heads get their fix. I'm a wimp compared to many I go for the mild to medium ones mainly.

            Hi Tim and welcome
Wish I shared your enthusiasm for chillies They scare me! However, I have 8 plants, all with chillies, in the greenhouse - and I'll never pick them. Secretly, I hope that they'll die so I don't have to touch the chillies!
Anyway, pull up a chair and make yourself at home!

Welcome to the vine, only tried peppers & chillies once they took such a long time to grow and were all ready at once. I may have to try again now I have a second greenhouse and more space.

                  Welcome

My first attempt at chillis, this year, saw a plant full of very mild jalapeños and some, equally mild, scotch bonnet that were not scotch bonnet apparently.

Hello and welcome to the vine Tim
I last grew chillis 3 years ago Scotch Bonnets, Orange habs and some Jalapenos I've not grown them since because I went a bit over board with the plants and still have a fair few chillis in the freezer.

I grow mild to medium chillies. The hot ones I find, are pure heat and obliterate the taste of whatever they added to.

Wow what a welcome, blink and there's another post. Thanks all for the warm comments (no pun intended).

Yes the chillies can do well with enough light, a spot with 6 hours+ of sun is ideal and really thrive if night temperatures are above 15 Celsius, and in the day under 30C.

Because I've got the grow lights I can keep em going over winter, and they will carry on cropping continuously - they do get to a saturation point where they're full of fruits and no more flowers come, but as the pods are picked they throw out more flowers.

I'm not sure what type of Jalapeno mine is, but it takes a while to crop compared to some chillies, but most of the pods have a good heat level. I think it might be 'Jalapeno M'.

I've given the Hot Wax, Carrot and Jalapeno a haircut today, and uses some magazines and books underneath to get them right up to the lights, and encourage some stubby dense growth over winter so all parts of the plant receive decent light levels. The cherry bomb has some high up pods so I've left that sprawling out everywhere for now.

It's now about 2 months to Christmas, I should get a good crop of the Jalapenos to give to the folks when I go and see them down in Devon over the festive period.

I'll post a pic in the chilli thread of the plants with their short back and sides.

                              Thanks again for the welcome!
                              Tim
