  • Hello from Leek Inquiry

    Hello all,

I've just this year started gardening. This forum has been full of useful info, and I've lurked here since I got interested, in about April.

I was in a shared house, and a previous housemate had done lots of work in the garden and planted flowers. I took these out, and tried various veg:
    successful: runner beans, rocket, parsley
    moderate: peas, carrots, lettuce, chillis
failures: courgette, onions, spring onions, leeks

Now I've moved house to a place with a huge, neglected garden. I'm trying to turn it into a vegetable plot. Planted or going to be planted soon:
kale and cabbages, broad beans and peas, onions and garlic.
There's far more space than I want to fill with those, and I'm digging out more beds and planting them with forage rye as a green manure.

Sadly my second post is going to be appearing in the 'Weeds, Pests and Diseases' section in about five minutes - I may have a problem.

    Cheers,
    Leek Inquiry

PS: I thought that there weren't enough gardening blogs on the web, so I've made one. It's really only for my benefit as a gardening diary and record, but there are photos and my plans if anyone is curious. Here 'tis: The Cut Worm Forgives the Plough

Thanks! It's been much harder physical work than I've done for some years, but thankfully the soil is sandy and easy to dig. (I grew up in Oxford and can remember the heavy clay soil there - lovely fertile stuff, but forms huge thick clods. It would have taken me about three times as long if I'd had to deal with that.)
