  • Hello from Leeds

    Hello everyone,

Your excellent forum has a been my go to for veg advice for many years now, and I can't believe I have left it this long before actually signing up. I'm here now, so I'll probably be bothering you with all sort of questions in 2020.

I am in north Leeds, and I have had a half plot for about ten years. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of free time to spend on the allotment, and so I have streamlined things to run with minimum effort. For me that means paths, beds, low maintenance crops, and growing through membrane. I know that's not the traditional way, and a lot of people don't like to see it, but it works for me.

I think that his time of year (winter) is my favourite on the allotment. Lots of optimism and anticipation for the growing season ahead; no weeds growing, and I feel I have some power over nature. ..... Then spring happens, and nature reminds me that I have little power, and the pre-season optimism fades away as things start to go wrong. I love it. One year everything will go according to plan.

Best wishes, and a Happy New Year to you all,
    Magnus

Hi Magnus - welcome to another lurker.
Remember the advice of a chicken - If things don't go according to plan, change the plan. You don't have to tell anyone.

I see a problem there - the weeds haven't stopped growing, some are even flowering and setting seeds. They have only taken their foot off the accelerator, not pressed on the brake.

Hi and welcome Magnus! You sound decidedly scandinavian - is there a link?

I hope you enjoy taking active part in this place, not just lurking! We do love questions and this is such a friendly bunch

                  Glad to see you here!

Hello and welcome. Nothing wrong with not doing things the traditional way, but I agree you'll never get a year when everything goes to plan. Mother nature always sticks her spanner in the works!

Hi Magnus welcome to the vine best wishes to you for a great year on the plot. Growing through membrane must help like a mulch does. I need to think more about mulching, the summers are so hot & dry recently.
