  • Hello everyone!!!

    Hi,
Just joined today. Didn't realize there is such a huge community for gardening. Started at home with growbags last year with a bit of success.

Hoping to expand this year with working on my soil more. It's clay and very little soil depth because of new build. Found a lot of building materials while digging the garden and so have started raised beds.

I will definitely benefit from all the expert advise here. Happy Gardening.

The good news is clay has the most potential soil fertility in it - the bad news is that it takes a lot of extra humus added in to unlock that fertility and to improve the soil structure.

If you can get anything natural like lawn mowings, hedge clippings, fallen leaves or similar fee or cheap then grab them. Compost is going to be your best helper in the garden whether you go for mulching or digging it in or some combination.

In the short term anything you can get like the contents of last year's grow-bags can be simply laid on the surface when you want to sow seeds directly.

If you have a specific questions please come back with them. ( a photo normally helps)

BTW you might also want to read a bit about "green manures" which can be a help, particularly in the Autumn

Thank you so much for such a warm welcome. A lot of good advice. I am trying to get free horse manure to improve the soil. It's such a slow process but I am sure will be rewarding.
