    Hello Grapevine.

Just want to take a few minutes to explain myself.

I started growing food with my granddad in his garden in the village of Mainsforth, Co Durham. He wasn't a wealth of information and to be honest isn't a great gardener, but he did provide the insperation that has seen me take on 3 plots since I was 16. I must add not all at the same time.

The plot I have today is poor, poor soil, poor location, poor pretty much everything. I had a wonderful plot, which I had to give up having met my future wife and moving to another village. The choice was the patch of weed choked scrub land or a window box. So naturally I picked the scrub....

I study my intrests with what my dad calls an obsessive compultion, whether its gardening or fishing. I have ammassed a large library of books and magazines with which to better myself and hope to pass on some of that here. I also hope to learn more and improve, with your help.

Welcome to the Vine That plot sounds a bit like mine when I took it over, but the soil wasn't that bad once the weeds were cleared, hope yours turns out the same

You'll find a few people on here share your passion for books and magazines (and knowledge)...

Welcome to the vine Marc, theres not a lot you can do about the poor location but you can get your poor soil sorted. Then the motivation should kick in. Good luck.

I was going to say that!

Welcome anyway. My only suggestion is to get yourself to the local farm or riding stables and get a trailer-load of dung - your soil will thank you very much! Happy growing.

Hi Marc - nice to meet you. Obsessives are welcome here - it's what we do best! Went to University in Durham and met Mr F there. Daughter got her degree there too - it's a special part of the country to us!

Cheers everyone. Have to say this is a much friendlier site than others I've been on.
I feel for you Jackyspratty, the preivous allotmenteer before me burned down a wooden greenhouse and decided burrying it was the way forward. Needless to say if the reaper hadn't beat me to it, thats what I'd be doing to him....
