  • Unusual Herbs

    Hi
I would like to start growing some unusual herbs does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can get unusual herb seeds from and any recommendations as to what is easy to grow and tasty. I have ordered some lime basil which seemed like a good idea at the time but now beginning to wonder what it will be like

Chiltern seeeds always have something a bit different!
Basils are a great starting point, there are so many var's. I've just picked up seed of: Lettuce-leafed, lime, purple, 'Christmas', Minette, small green-leafed and sweet Genovese.
Best thing is to try variants of things you really like and use to start with.

Moreveg are good for herbs too, and packet prices start at only 50p, so you can try a few to see what you like. I have just started off some salad burnet and winter purslane.
Some herbs are better from cuttings, such as French tarragon and mint.
        Hope that helps

I've got cinnamon basil that has germinated in an unheated greenhouse in Oxford - so too warm perhaps?

i got some salad burnet from the edible garden show but can't for the life of me remember which stall. I think it was an add-on on the T&M stall, they had lots of old varities...
Apparently it self seeds as well, so beware
I got something else too, again, can't remember what it was. I think it was winter savory but until I chekc the seedbox [stored elsewhere] I can't find out.

Why do you want to grow 'unusual herbs'??

You grow the herbs you use in cooking, ie parsley, sage, thyme.

P.S. Oops, I missed out basil, mainly, like corriander, I detest the stuff.

I like growing different and (slightly more) unusual herbs - mainly because I like to learn about them and its always a joy to discover a smell/flavour that you have never tried before.
That I can remember, I have chervil attempting to take over my veg patch, sweet cecily, next to my raspberries and moroccan mint (just bought) and thanks to Vicky, some angelica just estabishing in a pot. I have just sown some lovage, winter purslane and salad burnett (althought I have since been told it requires very alkaline soil which I dont have, but worth a try anyway)

I can highly recommend Nickys Nurseries for herbs - the selection is brilliant as is the service.
