  • Transplanting

I've managed to get a really good germination of basil and coriander. I've been able to have a good look for advice for the coriander on this thread, but my question is about transplanting the basil. It's about 3" high. The advice on the seed packet is to transplant it 3 or 4 to a 3" pot, but how deep should I put it in please? Up to the seed leaves?

I've just been browsing the threads and found that sinking the transplants (like you can with tomatoes) does not work for basil as the stem could rot. I grew the basil in transparent tomato cartons from the supermarket (the transparent lid made the unit like a mini propagator), so they're pretty crowded. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

      Hi FF,

Pot in on into 3" pots, 2/3 per pot, don't sink it, shud do ok, I tend to start pinching out at about 4/5" tall to get a bushier plant, hope this helps

Hi Mrs C and thanks very much, I'm going to need plenty of pots for the amount I've got - should have been more conservative with the sowing. It smells delightful and I'm looking forward to cooking with it if all goes well.

Basil keeps well as frozen pesto if you omit the italian cheese. We just defrost what we need then add the cheese when thawed.

I suppose fresh is best but I get carried away as well and sow too much!

Brillian Rogesse, thanks, hopefully I'll be able to do this.

If you crop it a lot, you can stuff more than one plant into a pot.... like the supermarkets do in their "growing herb" pots

I'm making a start tonight TS, might share some at work to save everyone pots of money (here's hoping).
