  • Tasteless tarragon

I've had two tarragon plants growing outside now for about three months since getting them from a plant sale in my village (had no luck from seed - it just refused to get past three mm tall for some reason), but haven't had chance to use them until the other night.

And then I noticed something was odd - neither plant had the slightest taste of tarragon - just tasted a bit like grass. Is it something I have done or something wrong with the plants themselves?

Have you got Russian or French?
French is what you get in restaurants, Russian the poor relative!
French rarely sets seeds so you will have to get plants from cuttings - ie garden centre

They were labelled one each of French and Russian, but look almost identical... I wonder if they are both Russian, hence the lack of taste then. Thanks, will keep an eye open for a plant from a more reputable source.

Does sound as if you have two russian tarragon plants - I have access to a large (and I mean large - approx 4ft square and 6ft high) of Russian Tarragon, and have three French Tarragon plants that I bought as cuttings early this year - no comparison in taste - the French is absolutely ace, the Russian is absolutely yeugh in comparison.

I've read that the russian is supposed to taste like an okayish weed and the French one nice. Not tried either myself yet.

Well, if this is Russian, definitely make sure to taste the French instead! Okayish Weed is very descriptive of it!
