  • Herb Newbie - They're growing - Now what?

    Hi Guys

I've had a look through and I cant find the answer - so apologies if this has been asked before.
I've never grown any herbs before and I bet this is a proper silly question.

So I have sown parsley, coriander, basil and thyme. All have popped up and now have proper leaves as well as seed leaves. (they are in 4 inch pots in the GH about 10 or so seedlings to a pot)
Here's the question - How do I grow them now? Do I pot up each seedling? Do I plant them in their final position in the tub I want them all to grow in?
How many seedlings will I need to make a decent display of them ? Does one seedling make a big plant or do I plant all the seedling close together?

Sorry - thats questions isnt it?

    Help

    Thanks
    Sarah xx

I'd leave them until roots show out the bottom and then de-pot them, separate them and plant them where you want them.

Parsley grows a serious taproot and is happiest with a long root run. The best parsley I've ever grown was one little pot-full (3 inch maybe?) planted in a 16 (maybe 18?) inch terracotta pot. Looked ridiculous at first but it filled the pot, overwintered no problem, and sent up 4-foot flower stalks the next year.

Basil can grow 18-24 inches tall given enough sun (ha!) and is also better off in a biggish pot. It'll get nice and bushy if you keep pinching the tips out.

Thyme will stay smaller. I've never grown it from seed, just from small plants, so I'm not sure how big a single plant will get. Mine usually end up about 6-8 inches across and the same high.

Coriander I can't help with as I loathe it!
        March is the new winter.
