  • School Gardens

    Hi all

Alot of us help and assist in setting up and running school gardens and there are loads of resources available to help and assist.

I thought it might be a good idea to try and collect them all for people.

If you know of any GOOD resource - can you post them here and I'll paste them all into this first post for people to access.

I'll start with the Garden Organic schools website here

The Food for Life Partnership website, which you can join and access loads of free resources here

    Schools Global Gardens here

A guide to Setting up and running a school garden [a Euro publication with worldwide remit] here

    RHS for Schools here

Morrisons Lets Grow...removed as none of their links work!

    Any others?

Thanks for the RhS tip-off Zaz.

Our school received labels, seeds, soil testing kits & waterers for registering. Today we got our prize for completing levels 1 and 2: £30 of Bulldog tools, 2 paper potters, Carol Klein's 'Grow Your Own Veg', and lots of veg seeds. Superb

my son has just started primary one and i've been press ganged into the PTA this could prove very useful come springtime!!!!
May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields and,
Until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand

        PotatoesforSchools
The UK Potato Coucil runs a yearly competition to see who can grow the largest potato, heaviest crop, largest crop, etc using potatoes and growbags that they supply for free. They also have lesson plan ideas and other potato activities on their site.

I just learned about it on a course I went on, so I've signed up for it.

.: SEED :. Transforming Learning Through Permaculture

Schools Environmental Education and Development (SEED)

Permaculture and Organic Gardening integrated into the South African National Curriculum (although next year sees a new curriculum come in).

I realize it is different climate and conditions for most people on this forum but SEED has their units available for download.

Like other I would reccomend the RHS, we're now working on level 4, and have recieved seeds, a copy of grow your own veg, 2 paper potters, hand tools and £50 T&M vouchers for completing the first 3 levels - well worth it.

The best place for that advice is in the bin. I suggest you ignore it and grow as many tomatoes and potatos as you like safe in the knowledge that they will never check up, no child will ever fall ill and noone will ever think of reporting it.

That's exactly what my teacher said. We're going along the "potatoes? Those are potatoes? Are you sure?" route if randomly questioned by an inspector type
