  • Honda or mantis tiller

Has anyone any recommendations of which tiller is best for my allotment? The soil is very friable and easily worked and I normally use a large wheeled rotavator which I can store in my shed.
Unfortunately it's no longer safe to leave tools down the allotment and so I need a smaller tiller that I can fit in the back of my RAV4 and lift in and out easily.
I'm not sure whether the Mantis or the Honda fg201 would be the Best Buy.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I have had a small Honda for a few years now. It had to be light enough for me (older female who has to be careful with lifting) to get in and out of the car easily - Nissan Micra. It is the FG201 and I am very happy with it and my soil is heavy. My neighbour has a mantis and he is happy with that.

I don't know how the prices compare though.

I have a two stroke mantis and it is a super tool. Ground needs to be relatively free though

          Thanks for the replies folks.
As they both have positive comments from members I guess it's down to looking at both and then making a choice then.

            Hi John

I have the 4 Stroke Mantis and swear by it!

It is very light weight and portable, folding handles etc, and can be lifted in and out of my boot space at the "Drop of a hat"

It,s 4 Stroke engine is very, very quiet, which is a big plus point for me.

As my plot directly faces a row of residential properties, I can happily tootle up and down all day long with my Mantis, if needs be, safe in the knowledge I am not disturbing any bodies "Peace n Quiet"

              Thanks Deano,
Does it start ok? Read some reviews that say they have difficulty starting?
That's what put me off them a bit.

                  Thanks again Deano,
                  That's eased my concerns.

I use to have a 4 stroke mantis tiller but ended up selling it. It seemed to spend most of its time in the shed than me using it.
When we it was used it worked like a dream. We did have one problem with the starter coil that it jammed one and it was a bu**er to get it released.

I've not been paying attention again. I missed this thread.
What Deano said covers it I love my mantis.

                          Thanks everyone,
I ended up buying the mantis and have to say I am stunned how good it is.
As my soil is do friable it turns it over without any problems.
It's very manoeuvrable and allows me to get very very close to crops ( my garlic and broad beans) without damaging them.
As I'm getting on a bit it is light enough for me to pick up with one hand and put in the boot of my car.
It has a 4 stroke Honda engine too which is a bonus.
It's certainly been a good buy.
