  • Fruit press recommendations

Once I get my machete sorted out I'm thinking of getting a fruit (well, cider if I'm honest) press - there seem to be a lot of 'generic' looking ones around -same style and look like same construction - this one caught my eye due to the price

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fruit-Press...ds=cider+press

Any thoughts or recommendations? (Other than don't mix the cider and the machete)

Can't really help but what fruit are you looking to juice and what quantities?

I've seen the mashers that look like those paint stirrers which you power with an electric drill

Semi industrial amounts at 6 litres of pulp at a time.

Might be better off looking at higher capacity if you're going to be making loads as there's cleaning and preparing time to be added to each pressing - pressing large quantities in a smaller press may add a lot of extra time compared to a press of greater capacity

Think we got some of our stuff from a company called Tompress - think they're French but you can get a translation on their website. They sell some amazing food processing stuff generally so I don't look at their catalogue or I could be tempted to spend a fortune.

I'm betwixt going for it full on and being sensible...

I expect financial considerations will downgrade my pitch from semi-industrial to cottage garden with 4 tree 'orchard'

                Will you need a scratter?

Had to look that up, not sure why you would want one though

It's definitely worth getting a scratter, you get much more juice

                      scratter = masher

but as you've offered VC (very kind I must say) - I float the apples over to you somehow so you can:

I'll send 'one of my people' over to collect the juice as we wouldn't want to risk any Severn 'water' getting in.

I'd never heard of a Scratter but when I saw you could hire one from BrewersDroop, I knew you'd want one

Over by yer in Kairdiff, there are apple pressing days when we can take our apples to be pressed into juice. There's even a group who will come to pick your apples for you

I was thinking about a flymo blade on a length of rod powered by a drill - or moding one of those paint mixers

I've heard of people using garden shredders to break up the fruit and we've used a cheap chipper from ALD&

i think jay-ell is right if your looking to make large amounts ,around our way you can hire a fruit press for the day that might be worth seeing if you could do that and see how you get on before you buy one ,if i was you i`d go for a one that holds about 25 liters of pulp in one go ,please let us know what you decide on ,cheers
