  • Casserole dishes

My hubby is so difficult to get christmas presents for and I know he would love a cast iron/terracotta type casserole dish.
I'm torn between Le Creuset (expensive), Jamie's Big Stewpot http://www.dawsonsdepartmentstore.co...oathome&m=&d=1 and these clay ones look good too The Cooks Kitchen - Tierra Negra Clay Cookware - A unique range of versatile handmade clay cookware from Columbia - An award winning kitchenware shop
Knowing what keen cooks some of you are, I'm after some reccommendations - bear in mind it's for a bloke so has to look the part too! Thanks!

I too love Le Crueset ware but find one needs the muscles of a blacksmith to move them from oven to table. Is there anything out there that combines beauty with ease of lifting?

I have some of the clay ones, and they should be soaked before using, and if stored away damp get a layer of mould underneath!
Also my French neighbours laughed when I put them on display as they are well known for shattering in the oven rendering the contents useless.
Having said that, I'm sure it depends on the make.

I have the large oval Le Creuset and it's going strong after 25 years...nice choice of colours too
What is great is that you start off the frying in the dish and transfer it into the oven if you wish- or leave it to simmer on the hob. No frying pan to wash up

I love my Le Creuset caserole dishes. Have a huge oval one (which gets used a couple of times a year which my mum gave me when she realised it was too heavy for her) which must now be about 20 years + old) plus a couple of round ones and my latest purchase (about 5 years ago) which is a shallow dish with a lid which looks really great on the table too. As somebody above has said, it's great that you can use them on the hob to brown the meat or whatever first. They are heavy and expensive but last forever and if you've got the lid on, tend to cook at a slightly lower temperature as they hold the heat in so well.

Noticed that there is a seconds shop at Cheshire Oaks where you can get them discounted a bit. Nothing the matter with them but some are end of range / special colours which didn't sell or in some cases a slightly incorrect glaze colour. Had problems not buying a load of dishes I didn't need!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I'm another fan of Le Creuset.Never really had fancy/expensive cookware, but got them as a wedding present from my parents 8&1/2 years ago.I've got a large casserloe which is used at least weekly(great for curries & chutneys also)& a smaller one which is used even more~mainly for mince dishes. As others have said they're great for starting a dish off on the hob & then finishing off in the oven.
Although expensive, they're a bit of kitchen equipment I'd find the money to replace if they got damaged.
the fates lead him who will;him who won't they drag.

Had my Le Creuset large casserole for almost thirty years now (cost £37 then), still looks as good as new yet used every week. It has had a replacement handle for lid £6. Not bad value over this time. Go on give him the best

You can have a look here.
Cookware, Cast Iron Oven to Tableware - Catering Equipment, Professional Restaurant Equipment: Akro Ltd

The same sort of thing as Le Creuset, but without the name and price. This is what chefs use, I understand, none of your poncy named flash.
We've got the 7 litre oval black one and it is good, but very heavy of course. The price seems to have almost doubled since we bought ours! But the round ones still seem a good deal.

As a bloke I can tell you I've been using the same set of LeCreuset saucepans & casseroles for over 20 years and they are still going strong. Love 'em to bits. Yes, they're heavy, but lets face it, a bit of extra weightlifting in the kitchen means less trips to the gym
