  • Cacti and succulents

Now that my tomatoes are fruiting and my winter veg are settled in, I'm starting to move inside already and I'm looking to expand my cacti and aloe 'collection' (not that I have a lot of space for them.) I was wondering whether anyone had advise where to buy decent, reasonably cheap aloe or cacti plants? (I was in France a few weeks ago and a fair few shops I was in had little cacti etc for 1 euro, I annoyingly only bought one, and since being back I haven't really found anything back here in the UK.) I find the internet is a bit expensive and you can't see the plant beforehand.
I'm currently growing around 10-15 cacti from seed, but it's slow and hard without heat lamps etc. I've also ordered some aloe seeds, but I have no experience of growing either before now, so any advice would be great too.
    Thanks,
    Ed

All the DIY shops have them cheaply round here and I once bought a cheap Aloe from IKEA and I know a friend got one from LIDL.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Where are you based? I have a biggish collection of cacti which I pick up from round and about. The best one being a monster 3ft columnar one from birmingham botanical for 12 quid.

Homebase have some nice ones for 99p; 84p on their 15% days.

One of the best cactus nurseries is cactusland, well worth a visit. I went in June and many were in flower.

You will need to make sure your greenhouse is kept to about 5C as most cacti don't like frost. The main thing is to stop watering about now so that the soil dries out and won't promote rot. Then start watering again in March about once a week with rainwater with half strength tomato fertiliser.

When you buy any new cactus, check the plants aren't infested in mealy bug. It looks like fluffy greyish white stuff. One local garden centre has lots of infested plants.
I've bought a cacti and succulents from B&Q, garden centres and flower shows such as RHS Tatton Park or Harrogate

Gordon Riggs in todmordon is fab, not just for cactus but all manner of strangeness. There sundries are great as well.

I rescued all of my class cacti from h^mebase. Was last september, and they were all very ropey looking, priced at 25 to 99 pence. Have thrived since then. This year was the first year that they all bloomed in unison.

Wilkinsons sell lots of different little cactus plants in terracota pots, I think they are about £1.50 for the 15cm tall ones and £2.50 for some a bit bigger in larger pots.
