  • Anyone use a card payment machine?

Hubby is thinking of getting one of these gadgets, so he can take payment by credit and debit card, instead of faffing about trying to find time to take cheques to the bank. Do any of you have experience of these things?

    Yep, Izettle.

No contract...£50 to buy + 2.75% per transaction. Works for me but can take four days for money to hit your account

The Paypal one looks quite good but I do wonder about not being able to give people a printed receipt. And it's just gone back up to £99 after a couple of months at half price.

        Hi,
When we had our business we had a Barclays card machine. It was quite simple just plug into a power supply and telephone line and off you go. There are the cordless ones about to.
Just check on transaction fees and if there are any cards you might have to pay extra for like American Express.

Oooh sorry, I forgot to mention, he is Vehicle based, so it needs to be a fully mobile unit. Thanks for your input so far.

Izettle fits in your pocket, you link to your email account and you can then send reciepts. It tethers to your smart phone for connectivity.

I thought people were moving away from cheques and paying via online banking. Doesn't that work for you? Saves the 2.5% charge on the card payments.
I even pay my window cleaner with online banking.

The majority of his customers are in the 'middle-age or older' bracket. A few don't even have mobiles yet! I think, in about five years time mobile phone payments will be much more common, but it is not happening yet. I regularly make payments from my mobile and I'm 51, but I am fairly computer savvy (I think ). He's been researching, too, and I think he's decided he'll go with the Izettle.

Thanks all, for your input. Very gratefully received.

That makes sense. My mum takes a trip to the bank to get cash (never uses the hole in the wall) before going to the supermarket. However, she does have a phone - not that she knows how to use it and it's never switched on!

I'm never ever likely to make a payment using my mobile phone
