OK so I'm a nerd. But I guess there are one or two self selecting nerds on here by virtue of this being an on-line forum.

I have books galore and a few bookmarked website guides for planting. I have access to the knowledge although its at the house and I'm at the allotment.

But what I observed last year was I'd head off to the plot and plant some sweetcorn seeds and transplant some turnips and broccoli and earth up the spuds. I'd get home and be distracted when I got in so not think much of what I'd done for the day till much later. At which point I'd not remember if the broccoli were planted in the first row or the second or if that was the turnip.

Then 8 weeks later I'm trying to remember exactly when I planted by corn and how far on it should be. If I had a planting guide it'd tell me that I should plant between May and July and Harvest between August and October or whatever. But it doesn't say "You planted on May 15th so you should expect to Harvest around August 31st" or whatever. I know its not that scientific. I know it depends on site, weather, feeding etc. But unless I've captured when I planted won't know when it 'should' be ready.

So I'd like an Ap that will do some of this for me:
    1. Record when I planted seeds / plugs
    2. Let me record where I planted them on a plan of my plot
    3. Cope with squ ft as well as conventional plot shapes
    4. Know the plant, so automatically add reminders for key plant events - transplanting, feeding, watering, treating common diseases, harevsting etc
    5. Let me defer any reminders by a certain number of hours/days if either I'm not at the plot or they aren't quite ready
    6. Ideally use weather info to add additional reminders to water if the rainfall is low, cover if air temp is forecast low etc
    7. Deal with more mundane tasks like prompting to turn compost, lime beds etc
    8. Prompt when harvesting is due
    9. When I harvest to capture quantities (weight, number - e.g. 2 normal sized sweet corn rather than having to weigh everything)
    10. Look-up some reference prices for my harvest - e.g. on Tesco's website and tell me how much I saved by growing my own
    11. Let me track how much I spent of seeds, fertiliser etc so I can see a total saving/spend
    12. Let me track time so that I can see which crops are time intensive and may not be value for money
    13. Link to a reliable reference source's website for each ingredient

    Clearly not asking for much!

I've found bits of these in a variety of fairly rough looking aps. But has anyone found the holy grail ap yet?

Anyone think this is unachievable? Pointless?

Anyone think I've lost the plot?

Polc, that sounds like a fantastically useful app. I don't know that it exists, but if you find one please let us all know!

Sounds like a cool app...I have seen a few but none that do that much...

The problem with any apps, marketed spreadsheets etc is that are devised to work for the general requirements of people and will almost certainly never be exactly what anybody wants as we all tend to want something slightly different. I've devised my own spreadsheet which I can adapt as I want but I think you'll be searching a long time for something with all the features you require. I think that basically you'll have and find an app that fits some of your requirements and compromise or do something yourself.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

My grandfather had something that would do all that except #10, #12, and #13.
It was called Acalendarandapencil and was pinned to his shed wall
              Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
              Endless wonder.

                I should probably therefore add
                14. Be with me whereever I am rather than at home or on the shed wall

I should explain I have no shed at the plot. I have a tool chest where the spade lives and this year will have a greenhouse. It would be useful to see what needs done before you get there and useful to remember what needs done once you are there so if the calendar is at home that doesn't work.

I'd dispute a paper system can do...

#4 - I want to write planted tom seeds on the calendar and it know that means in X weeks I should transplant, In Y weeks I should feed, in Z weeks I should nip out tips and in A weeks I should be pulling beautiful toms from the plant. All added on the calendar automatically and if I say "X" was a week late it know that Y, Z and A move on a week...

#6 - it can know that June, July and August are often dry and have a prompt that says ? Do you need to water. It can't know that the last week in May was bakignly hot and I planted out some seedlings last week and they probably want a drink...

I'm as attached to modern computing as the next person, but you can't "garden-by-numbers" polc. Transplanting is done when the plant is ready, not precisely after x weeks, because growth depends on so many variables, feeding depends on available nutrients already present and how quickly the plant uses them, and watering the same - if July is hot and it doesn't rain, you'll know without needing an app to tell you, surely?

Or am I just an old-fashioned 'seat-of-the-pants' type gardener?
