  • What's for Tea/Dinner/Supper/Evening Meal?

I was sat watching Sean Lock's stand up on Youtube and he made a joke about chicken kievs (I won't go into it), and got a hunger for them. So tonight I'm having them with gravy, mashed potatoes with cheese and herbs and green beans.
EDIT: I discovered a butternut squash in my cupboard, so I'm roasting it with lemon garlic and onion. Would have put some rosemary on it, but I can't get to my back garden...it's a long story!
    What's on your menu?

    As an aside:
When I was at school in the Midlands, my parents made me call the evening meal 'supper', while all my friends and their families called it 'dinner' (they also called school lunch 'dinner', very confusing for a child). These days I call it 'tea', just because that's what everyone in Hull calls it. What's your preference?
(By-the-way, there is no right or wrong answer; this isn't one of those 'lets start a debate' threads )

A hearty beef and red wine casserole with jacket pots, green beans and brocolli and pudding will be chocolate steamed pud with custard.

Alway called the midday meal 'Dinner' when we were at school because we were watched over by Dinnerladies. This became lunch when we grew up and went to work.

Evening meal went from being called 'tea' to 'supper' as we got 'posher'! (obviously we didn't really get any posher...), and if we ever had foreign exchange students staying a mysterious starter course appeared too!

Quite agree Ollie but always remember that a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.

Yes...yonks ago it was school 'dinner' and when I got home I got tea. Nowadays if I so wish I can partake in lunch'eon' and round about 7 we take dinner. As for supper - is that the snack you take before retiring. No, I don't take that. Just a cup that cheers.

Have I put the commas in the right place...

Hi Ollie (your high MOMness!) - I am not going to confess what I'm having tonight as it is all too embarrassing and too unhealthy.
However on the subject of meals - your aside remark- dinner was at dinnertime served by dinnerladies at school. Posher, indeed, was 'going out for lunch'. At 4 o'clock we had tea which was never a substantial meal - just tea from the pot and bread and butter. So later on the hungry amongst us had 'supper' - which was really nice! (A small savoury treat!) My grannie did some great 'supper dishes'. This was after the war when they didn't have servants any more...

We have breakfast lunch and dinner...unless dinner is about 5ish then it is tea; no idea why.

Tonight, it is roast veg [potatoes and parsnip] with a mixed veg mash [parsnip, carrot and swede]; with cheesy leek sauce and some quorny stuff on the side. All the veg brought from the lottie today.

We do too, but when I stayed with my Gran it was breakfast, dinner and tea. Tea was always bread and jam.

having homemade tuna fishcakes with a thai accent....if you get what I mean

We've got roast free-range Chicken (no, not one of mine ) and loads of veg, the spuds are home-grown but the cabbage is shop-bought I'm afraid - will do better next year!

I usually have brunch and dinner - just to be different!

                  Any time.

Probably best when I've got pumpkin pie for pudding; with fresh whipped cream.

FR Chicken drumsticks, roasted with sliced potatoes and rosemary, then torn up ciabatta bread chucked in for the last 20 mins or so, with a green salad & plenty of mayo Fab!!

I grew up with breakfast, dinner, tea and supper. But now only breakfast has a fixed name, sometimes dinner is lunch, or tea is dinner, or dinner becomes supper It all depends what we're eating, where, and what time!
