  • What would you do?

OMG! A big American bulldog just ran out of its gate and attacked my dog Bob who was being walked by my son Theo. Punctured his ear, bit his side and his leg. Another dog belonging to the same family - a little ratty thing, bit Theo's legs - 5 puncture holes and a rip in his trackies. Bob got big dog back and held him by the throat, when he let it up it went for him again and a load of people pinned it down. Neighbours everywhere ran out. Theo tried to walk off but ratty dog jumping and attacking him and Bob. Everyone yelling that dog is dangerous, could've been a kid next. Now, this dog was nearly put down last year, owners had to go court as it got out and attacked a guide dog, nearly ripped it to pieces. It got away with it as it doesn't attack people, the person who pulled it off the guide dog wasn't harmed. The people who pulled it off Bob just now weren't attacked. Neighbours all told me if I phone the police they'd all be behind me. If I phone the police it will be put down as it is on 'probation'. This dog did not attack Theo ratty one did. What would you do?

The problem is the big dog didn't attack my son, just (just!) my dog. So, in effect, it's not people aggressive, it just hates dogs. As it's been in trouble before, it's on it's last warning. So, I'd be responsible for it's death. The ratty other one who did bite my son, will get away with it...

Report them both Ancee. Dogs like that shouldn't be out on the street.

And if you don't report them and the next thing it attacks is a child; you will never forgive yourself.

Ancee, it could have killed your dog or your son. For goodness sake report it.

Only thing that's stopped me is who the dog belongs to. A very unsavoury character shall we say. That's what worries me more than anything. This dog ripped a guide dog and got away with it (it was in the papers) why? Because, I think in part it was because of who and what it's owner is. I still have to live on the street of this family and although the neighbours all say they'll say something if I call the police, it's me who has to call them and then , face what happens next.

Speak to the police. See what they say. You don't necessarily have to go on and press charges. Could be they are looking for a chance to sort out this dangerous dog. If it attacked your dog with no provocation, the only cause is that that is what it has been TRAINED to do.

It is probably being used for illegal dog fighting. Allegedly this does not just involve two like minded people using their own dogs - sometimes pets are stolen and put in the ring with these killers - they stand no chance - cats or other small animals are thrown to them to raise their blood-lust before the 'main' fight.

If the neighbours say they will stand by you, take them with you to the police station.

You say your dog held the other by the throat - that is defensive dominant/submissive behaviour. If the other dog attacked by going for your dog's back legs, that is aggressive cripple/kill behaviour. It is very hard to break a dog of that.

Thanks mothhawk. My OH is stuck at work, I've got to wait till he comes to try and sort this mess out.

Ancee - if your son didn't have the puncture wounds professionally looked at, make sure he is up to date on tetanus shots.

And remember - two dogs are a pack and will behave as such.

Report it, you can tell the Police that it was the small dog that attacked your son not the other one. It may only be luck that it didn't attack someone yet. If the Police say it has to be put down its the owners fault not yours. Its been given a second chance already and the owners should have made sure it couldn't happen.

Your son needs to have the wounds looked at by a doctor or nurse asap.

Report it, document it with photos. I can appreciate you not wanting any reprocusions, but like others has mentioned what if it happens again, you wont feel very good if the lad gets really badly hurt next time. You must have it on record. Maybe show the marks to the owner and calmly said how would they respond if one of their kids was bitten or if their dog was torn apart?
