  • What are the odds?

Whilst in the UK last week, I heard someone on the radio say that getting a double yoked egg was a million to one chance.
Firstly, was that a made up figure or based on some factual research?
If I accept that the figures are true, in a pan of 4 eggs, out of an egg bowl of 26 eggs, what are the chances of 2 of them being double yoked?
When I can sort out how, I will attach the photo of said phenomena, but am interested in the figures but am too dumb to work them out.
All help from mathematicians happily received.

      OOooo..how lovely!!!

Yeh- but logic tells me they're talking about % in all bought eggs. If you're buying from somewhere which only has a few chooks laying , then the chances are that the box could contain a couple of eggs from one chook which is laying doubles at the moment.
      Piccie- yes please!!!

This guy found a double AND a triple yolker a couple of years ago- bought from Asda!!!

...so what are the chances of THAT then????

I'd love to find a double yolker- not had one for years- and my gals have never produced any

That is pretty impressive Nicos, what a breakfast.
Mine were eggs given as part of my salary from work as the chicken killer of Retiers, and they had a good few chooks that laid, but every chance that they came from the same bird I guess.

I just replayed that clip, and it says one in a thousand chance of getting a double-yoker. Then some complicated maths comes on and my radio player gave up.

Ah, only a thousand to one. Well, in my defence, I was listening to it in a foreign language.

                      Cheers Piskie.

It does go to a million-to-one if you want 2 double-yokers in a box (I think ... my radio player stopped working).

                        Give it a listen

They did - and it wasn't just one girl - we had 2 on a couple of occasions. I think they were just getting into the swing. Teenage hormones etc! Not had one for ages.

We always knew when we'd got one - the egg was the same width but longer.

According to my research the odds of one is 1:1,000 so the odds of getting two are (0.001 x 0.001) = 0.000001 = 1:1,000,000

So you were right, but for the odds of two.

The story I found this out on was something Snadger posted a while ago about the person who found a box of 6 double yolkers. The odds of which were 1:1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (or 1 in a quintillion)!
