  • What job did you do whilst at school..?

    Hi all

When I was a teenager I worked in a garage as a petrol pump attendant on Saturdays and Sundays. This probably shows my age, as this type of job is long gone now - basically I used to fill up the cars with petrol (or however much the person wanted,)and take the money on the forecourt. I used to love the job in the summer, but hate it in the rain!!

My elder two kids used to have a paper round and then one worked in a fish shop on Saturday, ther other as in a restaurant.

I just wondered what everyone else did as a job whilst at school? Do kids still do 'Saturday' jobs now?

I worked in a Butcher's for a couple of years: up at 5:30am to spend the day lugging carcasses, cleaning the display trays and greenery, scrubbing the block with a wire brush and wood shavings, cleaning down the cold store.

I also worked on a farm EVERY weekend for a couple of years: I had to cycle 5 miles to get there - get worked into the ground doing all manner of cold, mucky work and then cycle back.

I think that most kids are a bit lazy now init?
Excuse me, could we have an eel? You've got eels down your leg.

Well I worked in Woolworths in Finchley on Saturdays. I also did a two week shift in C&A's Oxford Street during their winter Sale. That was frantic. Still got the bruises!

I worked in my mums' shop and post office from being about 11 to 18. Could run the Post Office by myself (including balancing the accounts) by the time I was 16.

Also worked in a bakery, local social club, shoe shop and as a temp office worker before I left school.

Didn't earn much, but loved the independence of having my own money to spend.

I also found that it gave me a respect for work and a fairly strong work ethic in general.

However, don't ask me regarding what 'young people' do today - I might get moved to the Rant thread!!!

All shops for me... first job was in an independent shoe shop at 14, then I went to a department store, sort of - it was called Co-Op Living and I don't know if they still exist, then Sainsbury's while I was doing my A-levels until my second year at Uni. I got a "proper" job for my final summer, covering someone's maternity leave at the DTI in London.

I also had a Saturday Woolworths job in the days when every counter had its own till.
They put me on the bedding plants counter which I`d never seen and instead of giving one lady 5 clumps of lobelia I carefully picked off 5 single shoots if you know what I mean.
Obviously the lady had no more idea than me as she didn`t complain.
Luckily I then got put on the sweets counter:-before pick n mix & I was much more familiar with the goods on that counter.

                  Me too!

As a student at Uni I used to work in a bakery and make pork pies - starting at 6am in the morning! Not good in winter with a 20 minute moped ride away in the snow and ice.

Worked in my local Starburger from about 12 to 17 on weekends and a couple of evenings after school (remember having to get a work permit from my head of year at school)
Then worked in a local newsagent at weekends until after A-Levels, when I went to work full-time.
                      Have worked ever since

Me too but the miners strike of 1972 put stop to that job so I started doing babysitting instead.

I still know a few garages where they will put the petrol in for you.

I worked in a bookshop - brilliant job for me

When I was a student I did a few different jobs - bar work, shop work, office and by far the best was colouring in geological maps for an oil company.
