  • Watching TV programmes via the Computer

Hi, I only use my TV to watch old videos and don't have a licence. Do I need one to catch up with programmes on the computer?
I would love to watch old episodes of Time Team for example.

No, I'm pretty sure you don't. The applicable phrase is "receive television programmes as they are being broadcast". If you don't have a TV card, and are watching them after they were broadcast, then I'm pretty sure no licence is required.

if you have a telly you need a licence ....... basically you are capable of receiving programmes, whether you do or not is irrelevant

when the analogue signal gets switched off, if you are unable to receive digital signals you should be ok

not sure about the internet bit, they will probably change that anyway

we had this problem with my sons flat, as each room has to have a tv licence, even if they only have 1 telly in the comunal room (which they use for playing games and watching dvd's) , because they are all classed as single flats, basically if they don't all have a licence anyone without one can get done, whether watching telly or not.

You can have a telly and only use it for videos/DVDs, but it has to be properly DE-TUNED. If the inspector dude comes round and can detect any sort of picture then that's enough to get done. I've just been reading about a bloke who pushed this all the way through court and was aquitted.

              Hi
Thanks for all the answers and the link too - thanks especially for that as it seems that there are so few people with broadband and without a TV licence that they haven't yet amended the "rules".
I had a lot of bother when I first said I didn't need a licence but as I have no arial and can not get a picture at all it was OK'd, they even gave me a letter in case the men in the van came calling which they never have. I've only kept it as it has a video facility and I've got hundreds still.
So, it looks as if I can go ahead without worrying! And hoorah, can catch up with Time Time!
              best wishes

There is talk about live streaming over the internet from ITV and BBC maybe others

the debate is when this happens will it affect the TV licence

If you have to register to use the service they will be able to check if you have a licence
