  • Vitax summer greenhouse glass shading paint -- safety warnings

Last year I bought a bottle of this at a local garden center and painted it onto my greenhouse. At the time of purchase I had a look at the small print and it really wasn't clear what was in it but I bought it anyway because the plants inside were getting scorched.

Forward on a few months to now, and the shade is starting to fail somewhat and becoming patchy. I didn't clean it off in summer as I should.

Anyway, I noticed that the bin I used to collect rainwater from the roof of the greenhouse is cloudy white and I'm not sure whether I should be using it on plants.

I had a look online for this paint again and managed to find a retailer on the internet that does list the ingredients : Contains a mixture of 5-Chlor-2-methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-on und 2-Methyl-2H-isothiazol-3-on (3:1) (CIT/MIT). May produce an allergic reaction.

I'm really not that much of a health freak, but I wouldn't have bought this stuff had I known it was composed of such toxic ingredients. A quick search brought up this:

    https://echa.europa.eu/substance-inf...fo/100.043.167

I'm not going to blow a fuse over this or anything like that but I am annoyed that the bottle does not contain these safety warnings on the front and because I didn't see them I bought it and feel mislead. I'll be disposing of this stuff now and won't be using it again..

...Surely with all the chit-chat about environmental awareness we can do better than using this sort of stuff ?.. I'll be looking at greenhouse shading material or internal roller blinds, .. which are plastic.. can't win

I used to use old net curtains down south, not a problem I get much in NE Scotland.

      Net curtains here as well.
No need to paint it on or wash it off.

I am sorry I don't want to downplay your worries, but hopefully reassure a little. I read a lot as my oldest has allergies. This is sometimes in cosmetic too.

The way I am reading the hazard info, is that it refers the the CIT/MIT in its pure form which would be very strong. I am guessing there will only be a small amount into your paint to reduce algae growth and lengthen the product life. Its not pleasant but often from manufacturing looking for alternatives to other banned substances.

Net sounds like a good alternative x

I have used net curtains and debris netting but most years I don't bother. As long as all the windows and doors are open and its well watered the plants don't seem to suffer.

The chemicals a preservative it’s named in dulux paint too, also I found something that mentioned the chemical in cosmetics/shampoo but I’ve only got the info on dulux,it’s in section two in this link, dulux paint is good,I suppose these things are toxic when eaten etc so it has to be told what’s in it.
