My turnip/swede have had all their leaves eaten by caterpillers. Can I cut the remaining foliage off and leave the turnip in the ground to carry on growing?

I would have thought NOT the leaves are the bit that gets the plants energy.
I have had the same problem just leave what's left of the leaves on the plant, the leaves may recover
