  • Tobacco Plants

Now a year ago a kind Vine gave me some tobacco seeds, now don't all jump on me over the evils of the dreaded weed but I grew some.

Whacking great plants, really pretty flowers, nice scent.

Picked the leaves all summer long and sun dried them.

Chopped them up and rolled myself a ciggie.

Most distgusting taste, a little bit like a cross between a lottie bonfire and rank chocolate.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

Hahahahaha Soz Steve, not really funny for you after all that effort, but...

I think I've got this right - don't the leaves have to be 'cured' rather than dried?! They have to kinda sweat a bit, and stay moist... Dunno how you do it, but there's instructions on the web if you have a lookie.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the seeds from a single baccy plant (apparently they make a HUGE number) - if they all germinated - would make enough plants to supply the entire tobacco industry for a year or something crazy like that.

Tobacco - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia has a bit about curing.
The Tobacco Seed Company - How To Cure Tobacco suggests that once dried tobacco is cured for 1 to 3 years to improve flavour.
Home Grown Tobacco World is a site I just saw linked from a comments box on a site I found when this thread got my interest. It looks like a bit of a goldmine of info, though since I don't smoke and have no intention of growing the stuff, I've not read any of it.

I smoke (know I shouldn't) but have never been tempted to grow my own cos the curing just looks too complicated. I shall carry on relying on my friends who can afford to go abroad to bring me home baccy.
