  • Those electric fly zapping thingys

    Do they actually work?
The ones I used to see in the bakery with the blue light that the flies flew into and were zapped! I have a tiny blue light from Ebay that does nothing, but the flies are starting to drive me mad (we are next to a beef farm) as they're everywhere! How do they attract the flies in?
Nicos - did you have one I seem to recall?

I have one and have found it works much better at night, think they are attracted to the blue light when it is dark.

Nope- mine is like a tennis racquet and you take a swing at them.
Works a treat- but you have to take aim at them.

This is an alternative - I can't vouch for it personally though: The World's Most Effective Fly Trap - Fly Traps - Fly Catchers - Fly Killer - FliTrap

(and I bet you could make your own with a little ingenuity. I have one of those glass wasp traps, and it kills lots of flies too)

We had one of the zappers, looked like a big chinese lantern and I really don't think it made any difference. It was one of those things that you try and then put in the shed for a few years before taking it to the tip.

We have one but I don't use it.(they won't fly into it)
I've found two or three elastic bands joined together work just as well(if fly has settled).

I also have one of these, but mine is not very effective at zapping the bugs. Seen one in work that you had to empty every day, so thought I would get a small version.
              Big mistake.

I bought my dad one of those one year for his birthday (he had a battered old fly swat that had seen better days).

All I can say is, make sure you keep it away from dogs.

My dad was sat in his armchair one day and had the fly swat (battery powered one) on his hand, draped over the arm of the chair. It was switched on and ready for action. My mum's dog came into the room and saw the swat, realised it was new, so came over to investigate (sniff).

Wet nose, electric current. Pop, yelp.

Didn't stop him doing it a second time though.

Thanks, sounds like the big ones are just a more expensive version of what I have already that doesn't work anyway!
TS - I use the 'red top' style ones outside and they work great but they'd be too smelly and horrid to have in the kitchen!
I might invest in the electric fly swat ones for the fun factor of killing (and we have dogs too...and cats.... children...chickens...I see hours of zapping fun ahead!)

                      We have one of these

in the kitchen and it is zapping all day. If you get a big fly land in it, it'll snap crackle and pop with a big cloud of smoke and the smell of burning flesh

Those racquet things make for a good work out - I bought one called the executioner that only works when you have your finger on the button (it takes a while to coordinate swat and press). It's not as effective as a good dose of flyspray (bad) but I've noticed recently that whenever I pick it up all the flies disappear! Now I have to hide it because my two delinquents (hubby and teenager) have taken to chasing around the house trying to zap each other..........

The day one of them gets me or the cat will be the day one of them gets to be the foundations of a new patio.
